Anyone here bidding on this?

A choice, not an echo.

Anyone here bidding on this?

I have a feeling our "UnKnown 1" is the highest bidder on this 1.
the price is WAY too high for what it is IMHO.

It's kind of funny that almost no one that hangs in the various Gibson forums seems to like these basses, but they always seem to go for big bucks when they turn up. [smilie=smilie_kopf.gif]

When these things came out you couldn't give them away, they sat for years at the store. then about seven years ago poof they were gone. They sat for a reason............................they were crap. Now they are just rare, I'd never pay that much for one.

Guys, I'm on record for deriding this (beautiful, but crap) bass wherever I can! I have one and a nice specimen too, still sounds like crap:

Nope, I didn't bid on this.

And if you want to know whether I bid on something, you're always free to ask (and get a truthful answer): uwe.hornung@cliffordchance.com

The price this thing went for pretty much matches my expectations: The Flying V basses (Gibson term "V"-Bass) have been going for between 2.500 and 3.000 bucks in pristine condition for the last couple of years. From a sound viewpoint they are not worth even a fraction of that steep sum - they are truly "collectible only", but "not worth hearing" pieces of design. You own'em not to hear'em.

Is there ANY known recordings with one of these red headed stepchildren, or any known player that used them in a live situ? [smilie=coz.gif]

Uwe I have to say that is the sharpest looking V I ever saw, white is THE color for that bass. Black, blue and silver burst came through the store never saw a white one.

Tetsu Yamauchi of Free/Faces/Rod Stewart/Keith Richards fame (or non-fame) collected (hoarded) them for a while - I've never seen him play one with any of these bands or artists. When he was with Rod Stewart, he could have at least theoretically played one, but you only see him with J Basses in that era. he has some solo albums - all pretty much non-available in the West.

Which is too bad really. His first band showed great promise and my would have looked that Flying V fetching with the kimono:

Great clip Uwe, but I don't think the tone of a Gibson V could even come close to damaging that particular tune. [smilie=smilie_kopf.gif]

It may have fit in better with...

I dont think there is any exceptional sounding V bass, that I have heard of?

I know people say the Epi V sound better?

I would take that $3000 and buy a LP signature instead

The bass player from All American Rejects used to use one live and on record. He still might use it, if that band's still going.
