I just found out about these. What's the deal? Are they up to Gibson quality? USA made? What are the tonal qualities?

US made, and had another name originally. Les Paul something or other bass. They were renamed MONEY to cash in on the bling thng, and maybe Vince Vaughn in Swingers. These seem be the lab rat bass for the Gibson guitar of the month club.

I played one a couple weeks ago and it was the typical modern LP neck and tone. I just prefer the old single cut version myself.

I have the blue meanie. I just put some TI flats on it and I have to make some adjustments(being lazy I guess). It is a very comfortable player with the typical gibby tones. I hate the name so I insisted on a plain truss cover, which they did send me (due to the $ not being in any photos). I like old basses & this is my only new one. There is a tone plate of walnut in these. Some say improved on the dbl cut LP bass.??? I really like the natural one better but I dont need 2.

Ergonomic, well-balanced, 24 fret easy access and generally well-made with the usual small glitches typical for US work [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif] ...

So that is all very un-Gibson! [smilie=grinning-smiley-044.gif]

Sound: Dark, blurry, phat, but not a "strictly-acquired-taste-mud-machine".

So that is all very Gibson! [smilie=music-smiley-005.gif]

The only criticism of the bass is that it is not very "rock 'n' roll" in looks or even in feel, yet at the same time sounds bafflingly vintage and warm where you would perhaps expect a nicely cultured hi end sound from it. Bound to surprise bandmates at rehearsals.

Thanks Pete. I think I just stole the bass. MF had it listed at $799 as their "Stupid Deal Of the Day" and tey honored a 20% discount promotion code that I'd just gotten in the mail. So I popped a brand new Gibby w/ case for $639 (with free shipping)........................................................................................ my wife's gonna kill me [smilie=cheeky-smiley-025.gif]

I tried with the same promo of 20% and they said either the $799 or 20% not both. [smilie=angry-smiley-005.gif]

Call back and try again. I called in the morning and the girl said no. I called back in the afternoon and the guy that answered said no problem.

Love My Les Paul Standard Bass

PS As I see the regular price is now listed, I'll wait and see if it's ever listed as the SDOTD again!
