Wal Pro bass custom - trying to find out more

Postby smrdo » Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:02 am

I have a Wal pro bass custom im trying to find out more about., history, value etc
I've had it for many years now, its in pretty good condition, there is some crackling when its plugged in so I suspect the electrics may need re-soldering in places, and two of the control pots need tightening up as they are a bit loose.
There is also some minor scratching etc as its obvioulsy been gigged a fair bit.

It was given to me in payment for a whole load of web design work by a professional musician friend of mine.

The serial number (well what i can find on a metal plate insisde the control panel) is ew003 a3

Many Thanks
Mark

Wow Mark, that is a very cool & rare specimen of a "transitional" period from the Pro to Custom series Wal basses. The serial # should be on the neck plate & probably start with PB####. I have a '79 & an '81 Pro series that have the same electronics as yours only front loaded onto a "scratplate" or pickguard. Judging from the Wal database: http://www4.cs.fau.de/~koesters/Privat/Wal/walspec.html yours looks like it is circa 1981.
The design of the electronics from that era is kinda funky, IMO... the pots are soldered onto the huge resin? circuit board & if you happen to snap off one of the knobs to the pots (as I did), your friggin' screwed. Anyways, hope I was able to shed a little light on your VERY COOL & RARE Wal you have there...

Best Regards!

Hi,
I've spoken with Peter at electic wood and it looks like it is dated around early 80s - 80 -81's and a tranistional model with the Pro electronics.
Could be a pretty rare model as there doesnt seem to be hardly any like it.
Anyway, if he finds out anymore info he'll let me know, so will keep you posted. Esitmates to get the electronics fixed etc, im possibly thinking around the £300 mark as i dont think i needs a lot doing. (so possilby less)

nope no random price as yet, like i said i'll have to think about selling as this was my dream bass and im sure i'll never be ablt oafford another one lol.

heres some further feedback from yahoo groups

"Wow! That is one rare bass you have. I've only ever seen one like that and it belonged to Percy Jones.

It must date from early 1980, as that's when Wal was beginning to think about moving away from the "production line" Pro basses to the Custom range we still see today. The electronics are from a Pro 2e, but normally they would have been part of the front-mounted scratchplate. With this bass Wal has moved them to the internal cavity but retained the three mini switches in what would have been their usual position, so it dates it in that interim period between the end of the Pros and beginning of the true Customs (I know because I have the first Custom ever built).

I have never seen a Wal without a neckplate, again this is where the serial # should be. Pete also would have it written on a piece of tape on the inside of the control cavity cover that also listed what type woods were used. Not trying to imply anything here, but it kind of looks as if someone intentionally removed the serial #'s... [smilie=coz.gif]

Hi,
thanks for your reply,
Im convinced theres nothing "dodgy" with it, I trust implicitly the person who gave it me and he had it for a long time.
I've asked him to let me know if he knows any more history...
